Fun fact about the Brogue Shoe … when viewed from the top, the toe cap is traditionally “w” shaped and looks similar to a bird with extended wings; hence the common nomenclature for this beautiful + classic shoe, a “wingtip”. Okay, history lesson over. Seriously though, I have ALWAYS been in love with the brogue shoe for its long-standing place in the fashion world + beautiful details + overall look of sophistication and class. This love affair has led me to search for a beautiful white brogue for quite some time … as tall women everywhere can attest to, it is not easy finding cute + trendy shoes in larger sizes. But then I found these!
Stunning right? These beautiful white leather brogue shoes from Long Tall Sally are available up to size 15 (no joke, seriously, check the website). With a luxurious feel, these visually-appealing shoes incorporate a timeless + elegant crimped trim and pretty punched detailing. This delicate detailing + design element is also a secret tip to help flatter a larger foot … when a shoe is visually broken into sections with small detailing, this tricks the eye into seeing smaller sectioned pieces rather than one large, clunky shoe/foot (tall women everywhere can say a silent hallelujah for that)!
For a summer day at the office, I styled these shoes with a pleated skirt, white top and a few accessories to create that polished + professional + corporate look. These shoes would also be work-appropriate when paired with a cuffed trouser or cigarette pant for the warmer months ahead. I also absolutely love that these brogues are a feminine take on a historically male shoe ... and one that men have worn to the office for decades.
A classic brogue shoe is also markedly versatile in that it can provide a stylish + polished update to your weekend wear. This summer, I’ll be pairing these shoes with a cuffed skinny white jean, and some crisp white shorts. As a bonus, the shoe fits true to size, is incredibly comfortable, and a great option for any woman who has a long commute in her daily schedule. Oh yeah, they’re also ON SALE at Long Tall Sally.
While you’re browsing the LTS website, be sure to check out all of the chic summer sandals, workwear flats, and classic pumps featured in their current If The Shoe Fits campaign. There are some truly beautiful styles that are made to flatter larger feet. And if the shoe fits … well, you know. Enjoy loves!
The weather is finally starting to warm up (thank you mother nature), and summer activities and events are being planned. In my professional life, the summer is usually a bit slower as New Yorkers often vacation, spend more time with kids who are out of school, and begin venturing out to The Hamptons for long weekends. In years past, this has been a great time of year for me to experiment with new styles in a more relaxed office environment. In looking ahead to the start of summer, I have been thinking about sourcing + experimenting with three new items for work.
1. A Fabulous Scarf - Why I haven’t incorporated a classic statement scarf into my professional wardrobe earlier is just plain crazy! It’s time to fix that. I recently fell in love with the Statement Scarf from MM.LaFleur. It is incredibly soft, and a great conversation starter (trust me, you will undoubtedly receive compliments when wearing it). The scarf is also a beautifully versatile piece in that it can be worn tied around your neck, as a shawl on cooler summer nights, or as a head wrap if you’re going all Thelma & Louise this summer! Here I’ve styled it with a crisp, white short sleeve top and a brown leather belt. And take a look at the amazingly purposeful + empowering message the scarf contains when opened:
2. A Professional + Polished Summer Bag - I have some pretty tough requirements when it comes to work handbags. Any woman who spends 12+ hours a day commuting, working, attending various events and managing her family life needs organization, ease, something that will last, and something sophisticated, polished and chic. After doing loads of research, you will catch me carrying the Dagne Dover 15” Tote this summer. This bag is the ultimate day-to-night companion and catch-all, with a luxurious feel and tons of compartments to keep every essential in place. Love it too? Use code “SIXFOOTSTYLE” at checkout for 20% off.
3. A Pleated Midi Skirt - A pleated skirt has been a work wear staple for decades, so I love this updated + chic take on a contemporary classic from Forever 21. I recently purchased this skirt (how gorgeous is the color), not knowing whether a pleat would be appropriate for longer-legged ladies … however, our long stature actually accentuate the material without drowning our lower torso in folds + creases. I’ll be incorporating this into my summer work attire for sure.
Your turn ... what's on your summer must-have list?
Gone are the days of carrying around a feminine-looking men’s briefcase filled with files, notebooks and other work essentials. Let’s say a silent hallelujah for that, and mindfully pay our respects to the working women who paved the way for a change.
Today, there are lots of options for working women to source chic, elegant, and functional bags for their busy work lives. Between commuting, working a full day, throwing a laptop in your bag, heading to a late client meeting or happy hour, and then trekking back home … our bags often become the catch-all for our lives. So help yourself (and your sanity) by staying organized. Here are my tips:
Buy a Business Bag - Okay, that fringe, cross-body bag is really cute, but it is not going to help you stay organized or hold half of the stuff you’re going to need during the work week. Instead, opt for a professional + elegant + multi-functioning handbag. I recommend purchasing a bag that makes you look and feel like you’re on the corporate catwalk, and one with a removable shoulder strap (lifesaver when you need both hands free).
I have been eyeing the vintage-looking Emma Bag from JEMMA lately for its timeless + polished look, and loads of features for staying organized (2 interior pockets, laptop sleeve, phone pocket, pen and lipstick holder, key strap, credit card holder, exterior ID/card holder).
Store Miscellaneous Stuff - Purchase small bags for the miscellaneous items in your bag. Think about sourcing a cute coin purse to hold change, a mini makeup bag for the essentials you carry with you, a small bag for feminine hygiene products, and a cute case to hold gift cards, tickets or important business cards. This keeps miscellaneous items organized in your bag, rather than rummaging around at the bottom.
Get a Chic Business Card Holder - Early on in my career, I kept my business cards in my wallet. Eventually, I received a beautiful business card holder as a gift from a friend, and realized how unprofessional it was to be digging for my business cards amongst a mix of credit cards, gift cards, receipts and more. Today, I carry The Card Case from Dagne Dover. This elegant card case is incredibly functional with two interior pockets and one exterior pocket ... and it is strikingly beautiful.
Dump the Junk - Once I am finally home at the end of each business day, I empty the contents of my bag onto the kitchen counter and begin putting everything back into my bag piece by piece. Throw away the trash/receipts/tissues, replace items that have gone missing, and put the necessary items for tomorrow’s busy day into your bag.
These tips have helped me stay organized throughout the busy work week. What has helped you?
It sounds too good to be true right? If you’re like me, you don’t have time (or the desire to make time) in your schedule to visit the local mall, walk from store to store browsing + trying on clothing. So, you almost exclusively purchase your attire for work online. Solved right? Unfortunately not. Inevitably you end up visiting a local store to exchange + return + become frustrated about how much time this all takes.
That all ends today. I had the wonderful experience of visiting with MM.LaFleur over the weekend in NYC. This clothing company is revolutionizing the way that busy, working women shop by putting the fun + ease back into dressing for work.
Here’s the skinny … The company was launched in 2013 by founder Sarah LaFleur and partners Miyako Nakamura + Narie Foster. These three dynamic women, began producing quality, diverse workwear that women everywhere can source easily and conveniently. Today, MM inspires purposeful women to look and feel beautiful in their clothing, without laboring to do so. Women can utilize MM’s services to build wardrobes full of versatile, stunning pieces for both work and their busy after-work lives.
MM.LaFleur offers three options for shoppers:
Online - Visit and shop to your heart’s content.
Bento Box - Fill out a brief online profile, and 4-6 hand-selected work wear items will be shipped to you. Keep what you like, and send the rest back. MM carries sizes 0P-16 and XS-XL. Dresses run from $165-$325, separates from $110-$295, accessories from $35-$90 and jewelry from $110-$325. This is a fantastic option for anyone living in a location where MM does not have a showroom location. Speaking of …
Visit a Showroom - Schedule a time to visit MM’s showroom in NYC, or a pop-up location (current pop-up spots include DC, Philadelphia and Chicago). You’ll fill out a brief online survey while making your appointment, and arrive to a dressing room full of clothes to try on. A personal stylist will help you, and only you while you shop and sip espresso + wine. And you’ll wonder why you ever shopped any other way.
I visited the MM.LaFleur showroom in New York City over the weekend and the afternoon was the shopping experience I have been searching for/desperately need in my life. I walked in and met with Khey-Ara, Angel + Janet who, after chatting for a few minutes, escorted me to a dressing room filled with clothing for me to try on covering an array of colors and styles. ALL (no exaggeration) of the items waiting there for me were pieces that I would have purchased and incorporated into my work wardrobe. Do you know how many tedious hours I would have spent searching online for this many items … how many hours scouring a mall? If you’re looking for an entire wardrobe refresh, look no further. Here are some of my absolute favorites:
Khey-Ara, Angel + Janet and I chatted a bit about MM.LaFleur’s upcoming collection which will be one of their most length-diverse collections yet. MM has designed some of their longest pieces ever to accommodate taller customers who prefer a more conservative look - a request that their stylists heard from clients, and responded to. Their newest Unsuitables Collection, incorporates numerous tall-friendly options, and a modern uniform for the working woman who seeks work fashion beyond the standard + stale suit.
Stunning dresses, length-appropriate skirts, and versatile accessories (The Statement Scarf is literally the softest silk I've felt + includes a fun/inspiring message when opened) make MM a one-stop-shop for everything the busy, working woman needs in her closet. With luxury-quality fabrics, primarily from Italy, each MM piece is an investment that will physically last for many years, while remaining in-style with classic hemlines, elegant detailing and an overall timeless feel to each item.
My favorite item that I purchased to incorporate into my work wardrobe was the stunning Catherine Dress in graphite. This dress is incredibly comfortable while maintaining a classic, sophisticated + polished look.
A huge thank you to the entire MM.LaFleur team for allowing me to visit your showroom, and an extra hug to Khey-Ara, Angel, Janet + Alexa. I can’t wait to return again and again.
