We’re full swing into April and while I’m not really a fan of rainy weather, the thought of having the summer season right around the corner is keeping my spirits high.
Hopefully by now, the weather where you live has warmed up a bit and you’ve ditched your winter coats for a springtime jacket. My favorite jacket for springtime in the office is without a doubt, the trench coat. They’re incredibly versatile, chic, and above all else, functional during those rainy days when you need to stay dry.
I’ve had the same Michael Kors trench coat for years, but decided to donate it this year and get a new coat in a tall length, and something that fit a little better. Here’s what I bought (and have fallen in love with) along with a few other recommendations for work-appropriate trench coats:
FOR TALL WOMEN
I purchased this trench coat from Long Tall Sally right after the new year, and I have loved wearing it every day. The fit is perfect for my taller frame, and the navy color is so elegant and timeless.
Love … the material, color, venting (that’s fabric-filled so you’re not freezing), details on the cuff and the length to my knees
Don’t Love … the only thing missing from this coat is a removable hood. I was spoiled with my last trench having one, and during those unplanned downpours, it was super convenient to be able to pull up my hood when I didn’t have an umbrella handy
I recently stumbled on this trench coat from Argent.
Love … classic look, places to keep all your technology dry, sand color and the wind-resistance material
Don’t Love … it’s only available for pre-sale right now, so you’ll have to wait until after May 1st when it will ship
FOR SPLURGING FASHIONISTAS
This coat is so glamorous.
Love … the long length, modern cut, and the Italian cotton (swoon)
Don’t Love … personally the price is a bit high for me, but if you got it, spend it baby
FOR MILD CLIMATE BABES
This lightweight beauty rocks.
Love … lightweight if you live in a warmer area where rain does not mean cold weather most of the time, machine washable, and the color is lovely
Don’t Love … the angled pockets in the front ... I'm not sure how functional they would be
Regardless of which trench above is your favorite, I have to add this little black envelope clutch from Tobi in here as a recommendation to accompany any of these looks! It’s a black velvet material with gold chain and metal details, has the cutest black leather tassel, and it’s a perfect crossbody which is clutch (see what I did there) when you need both hands free for an umbrella and portfolio while it’s raining.

Self confession … I am PUMPED about several of the Spring/Summer 2017 runway trends this year. Why? They’re fresh and new! Believe me, I love a good nautical stripe, but after the long cold winter we had in New York, I need some life in my wardrobe, some vibrancy, joy and fun!
So here’s the challenge. If you watched any of the runway shows, or even do a quick Google search for this season’s hottest trends, I think you’ll be hard pressed to find many runway models donning looks that are appropriate for corporate America’s wardrobe requirements. No matter. There are some simple adaptations of this season’s hottest trends that you can still incorporate into your work wear, with pieces that will last for years ahead.
Trend #1 - Pump It Up
Well, block pump it up. A block heel is the perfect combination of comfort and chic. Commuters, women who stand for large portions of the work day, or anyone who is looking to rock a tall heel, but still be able to gracefully walk, should source several block heeled pumps this spring. I’ve been wearing the Beatrix Pointed Pump from Lonia on repeat as we transition from winter to spring. The elegant gray suede material is ideal for mixing and matching with almost any piece in your wardrobe. Don’t be fooled though just because this shoe has a neutral color. The 4” heel and pointed toe finish combine classic styling with a more modern height. Stand tall and kill it at your next big meeting in these beauties!
Trend #2 - Throwing Shade
Long sunny days are upon us, so it’s important to protect your eyes, and equally as important to look fabulous while doing it. I just picked up these oversized sunglasses from Tobi. They’re Jackie O all the way, and I can’t wait to wear them all summer long (while secretly pretending I’m half as styling, elegant and amazing as she was).
Trend #3 - Head To Toe Florals
Floral pieces are nothing new to the spring/summer runway, but designers took this trend and amplified it this year by creating bold floral suits, pants and blouses for a head-to-toe look. However, this isn’t super office-friendly (I can hear my colleagues teasing me now), but floral is most certainly office appropriate for the warmer weather. I personally adore this Leaf Print Pleated Dress from Long Tall Sally that incorporates the floral trend with another one of this season’s clothing must-haves … pleats! The beautiful print on this below-the-knee dress, the flowy pleats, the satin cinch at the waist … I promise, you will get compliments on this dress.
Trend #4 - Simple, Sweat-Friendly Jewelry
If you live/work in city environment, I’m going to venture a guess that you make adjustments to what pieces of jewelry you wear when the temps are sky high. I used to try and rock my chunky watches, statement necklaces, and dangling earrings year-round, but as any city slicker will tell you, it just gets too damn hot for this. This year I am on the hunt for simple, elegant, lightweight jewelry that I can wear and still feel stylish in. This gold, pull down bracelet from Tobi is on-trend for the season, and I love the minimalist styling.
Trend #5 - Summer Brights
The color pink is ‘the it color’ to be wearing this season. And while a lighter, feminine hue might look lovely for springtime, turn up the heat (and turn some heads) this summer. Go bold or go home. I love this Beatrice Skirt from Of Mercer. This adaptation of the classic pencil skirt has an asymmetrical detail and ponte fabric, so you’ll feel as good as you look.
