Tall women of New York and the tri-state area … open your calendar, and clear your schedule for this Friday and Saturday! There's a new tall retailer coming to town. Chèlbè, a lifestyle brand providing clothing to women 5’9” and taller, is hosting a pop-up shop at 187 East Broadway on Friday and Saturday from 12-8pm.
I had the recent pleasure of meeting Chèlbè founder Diana for a bellini and a wonderful conversation.
SFS: Chèlbè is such a beautiful word, what does it mean?
Chèlbè: Having roots as a creole word, Chèlbè means tastefully elegant, graceful, or luxurious in dress, style, design, etc.
SFS: When did you launch? What motivated you to create the brand?
Chèlbè: September 2015. As a tall woman myself, I empathize with so many other tall women who struggle to find length-appropriate clothing, made with quality materials, and sold at reasonable prices. Tall women should not have to pay more for their clothing because of their elevated stature. I created Chèlbè to provide on-trend fashion wear tailored to fit women with longer inseams and arm lengths that are challenging to source at traditional retail stores.
SFS: Where do you find inspiration for your pieces?
Chèlbè: The runway and street styles. I spend a large portion of the year in Greece and the United States, so I visit as many stores as I can and observe what women are wearing on the streets.
Come meet Diana, and myself this weekend at the Chèlbè pop-up shop for champagne, and a stunning display of the entire summer collection. And bring your old clothing! Chèlbè will be collecting gently used clothing to donate to those in need in Haiti.
Hope to see you there!
As a timeless work wear staple for decades, women have flocked to the sheath dress for its versatility, classic styling, and flexibility in the workplace. And as temperatures start to warm, I can’t help but notice more and more women walking the streets in beautifully styled sheath dresses.
A classic, well-made sheath is a great option for important meetings, presentations, or unplanned client happy hours. And it’s a dress that will easily carry you from your desk to date night. A sheath dress also provides flexibility in its ability to navigate different seasons. Throw on a pair of tights, booties and a blazer during colder months, and you’re able to secure a substantial amount of wear from one staple piece. Even with a classic, more traditional silhouette, there is ample opportunity to express your personal style within the fabric + cut + details of a sheath dress. It’s a winner in my wardrobe.
Here are my favorite sheaths for Summer Sixteen!
I adore this dress for its classic silhouette, but more importantly for the beautiful, stunning pattern! If you’re looking to express your personality and personal style in the workplace, this dress needs to be in your closet.
The zigzag stripe motif is on trend this summer, and the flattering crew neck + cutaway shape will carry you well into fall and beyond. Throw on a black blazer for work, and transition into a leather moto jacket for an evening out on the town.
This beauty is also tall-friendly and plenty long if you feel like rocking some high heels.
LAUREN Dress from Kim and Proper
This modified sheath dress is a versatile must-have for summer Fridays! With a traditional collared neckline, ivory button detailing, above-the-knee length, and a rich olive green color, I am smitten.
Pair this dress with a braided belt and heels for your work day, then transition to leather sandals or a fedora to incorporate that summertime beach vibe. And tall ladies should know that Kim and Proper includes a 2” hemline on all dresses, so there’s room to play with length.
If you are looking to start your collection of sheath dresses, or for a new LBD, the Bedford Dress is a wonderful wardrobe staple. A classic crew neck, above-the-knee hemline, and black stretch fabric lend well to statement accessories, a blazer with a pop of color, or a cutting-edge shoe.
I also swoon over the Hudson Dress with its minimalist style, cap sleeves and heather gray fabric. Straight on, this dress exudes a traditional + elegant vibe, but hidden black architectural detailing reveals a modern, city-chic look.
The Sarah 6.0 from MM.LaFleur
A sophisticated sheath with a modern twist. The structured cut-away shoulder, streamlined silhouette, and almost flutter feeling to the cap sleeve give this sheath a little something something. And the dress is machine-washable + wrinkle free so it’s a great grab-and-go piece for Fridays when you’re not feeling like taking out the iron.
I would love to see your favorite sheath dresses that you rock all summer long at the office. Post on Instagram and use #SixFootSheath to share. Enjoy the week lovelies!
White jeans … a classic, summer wardrobe staple. Yet, finding the perfect pair has been a chase down the rabbit hole for me over the last year and a half. Yes, you read that correctly, I’ve been searching for a pair of white jeans for over a year.
If you’ve read some of my past blog posts, you have probably deduced that I am incredibly discerning when it comes to clothing, and finding the perfect white jean was no exception. Hence the lengthy search. Along the way, I purchase and returned roughly 30 pairs of white jeans from various retailers (both big, brand names and local shops) for various reasons.
That search finally ended when I purchased the 8” Skinny Jeans in Pure White from Madewell. Here’s the skinny (no pun intended … kidding, the pun was totally intended):
Rise: Long gone are my 20’s and my phase of low-rise denim. Today, I exclusively purchase high-rise jeans so that I can move, sit, travel, live, etc. and not be in constant state of concern about whether my pants needed to be pulled up. With an 8” rise on these jeans, all of my curves are tucked in, and these pants stay put.
Look: I was searching for a clean cut jean, free from designs/distressing/rips/etc. Something timeless that will last for years. These are it. Plus, if you’re feeling fancy, they can be monogrammed with gold stitching.
Weave: So many of the white jeans that I purchased over the last year and a half were see-through! Literally, almost every pair. Let’s have a real moment here, many of us have cellulite (myself included) so I needed a thicker material to conceal, but not too thick that a white summer jean would become unwearable because it was too hot. These jeans are specially woven to counteract the whole see-through factor.
Length: As with every pair of jeans I own, I needed a tall-length option. And I was after an ankle length, so that I can wear these jeans through the fall and winter, as opposed to a capri length which limits me to summer months. The regular length on this pair is 29”, the tall is 32” and the taller is 35”. I ordered the taller length and they fit perfectly.
I can’t wait to wear these jeans again and again this summer.
