Work wear, corporate styles and and business fashions for chic + corporate women.
No matter where you live, there are inevitably days when Mother Nature gets the best of you during a portion of your commute. Especially if your trek to and from work involves some form of public transportation, you’re often left waiting for a train/subway/bus while snow accumulates at your feet, or rain washes down on you.
Now that fall is starting to set in, it’s time to begin thinking about how to master the art of maintaining your professional look while commuting during the cooler months ahead. And this is not an easy feat. Rachel Mancini, a Cleveland-based CPA (who also inspired me to write this blog post) chatted with me about her struggles commuting to a major city each day. “I live in a suburb outside Cleveland, and walk about a mile for my morning commute. We have finicky weather where we can have a blizzard in the morning, then sunny skies in the afternoon. I am at a loss on what footwear to slip on when Mother Nature strikes, so I still look polished and professional.”
Girl, I got you. Here are my commuting tips to maintain your chic + professional business appearance during mother nature’s worst!
CHECK THE WEATHER
Seems intuitive, but I can’t tell you how many times I have forgotten to look and been caught in the rain. Just sneak a peek while you’re picking out your outfit, whether that’s the night before work, or in the morning. Mother nature preys on the uninformed. Arm yourself accordingly.
ROLL IT UP
For those days without precipitation, I reach for a rollable flat during my commute. There are tons of retailers that sell some form of rollable flat, but I’ll be honest, there are very few that actually look polished and professional for those moments when you bump into your boss while walking into your office building, or when you head out after work for drinks with friends. Here are the three I recommend:
WELLIES AND WINTER BOOTS
Invest in one great pair of timeless + sophisticated rain boots, and one pair of winter boots to wear during your commute. Opt for black since it will never go out of style, and steer clear of trendy details, or anything with a sole that doesn’t provide some traction. Black suede OTK boots are a great look for winter, but they’re not great for commuting in slippery conditions. Think function first, then fashion. Here are my top picks for rainy days:
And my top picks for snowy weather:
Once I arrive at my desk, I usually switch out of my commuting shoes and into my pumps for the work day. Last winter, I purchased a boot tray, filled it with river rocks, and kept it under my desk during the winter. It might seem trivial, but having an organized place for your boots while you’re at work, and a tray where they can dry off makes a big difference. And this is the perfect spot to store an extra pair of boots for those days when rain sets in mid-day and you’re stuck at the office without proper footwear. Here's a great tutorial ...
What are some of your favorite tips for navigating the winter months, commuting and maintaining a professional appearance all the while?
