If you read last week’s post regarding workwear items to splurge on, and treated yourself to some splurge-worthy items over the week, there’s a chance that your wallet might be in a destitute state. Have no fear! This week, I’m covering workwear staples which I recommend saving your money on. These are items, in my opinion, that can be sourced at reasonable prices without breaking the bank.
So if you’re looking to refresh your wardrobe, or you’re just starting out in your career, don’t deplete your savings accounts! You have options my friend …
#1 Oxford Shirts - As a work wear staple, the classic oxford shirt is an item that working women can incorporate into numerous different styles of office outfits. Add it to a pencil skirt, a pair of trousers, underneath a jumper … lots of possibilities. Retailers like Target + TJ Maxx + Macy’s sell affordable oxford-style shirts that will allow any working professional to invest in a few different colors and patterns to play with. At minimum, I recommend purchasing solid black, white, navy and light blue as these versatile colors will match most accompanying items. I’ve been eyeing the TTYA Mono Long Sleeve Shirt with its classic piping detail and monochromatic look.
#2 Shoes - Inevitably, the shoes I wear to work take a beating (commute + work + networking event after work + errands + another commute = 15 hour days sometimes). That, coupled with mother nature, and my unexplained ability to always get my heel jammed in a sidewalk crack or other small hole, means I’m purchasing new work shoes often. So in the interest of my bank account, I source shoes with classic styles and colors that will coordinate well with the clothing in my closet. Don’t spend $500 on pumps that will be ruined in a few short months. Instead, opt for affordable brands that still provide the comfort and support needed for those marathon days. Lately, I’ve been swooning over the Michelle Shoe from Smash Shoes to transition into the warmer months, while still maintaining that classic bootie shape and adding a stunning color. Love them as much as I do? Head over to the Smash Shoes website and use offer code "sixfootstyle" to save 10% on your order!
#3 Jewelry - I don’t believe in spending a lot of money on work wear accessories/jewelry because, well, you simply don’t have to. There are so many different retailers that offer affordable options for chic, elegant and work-appropriate jewelry … just check websites for sales, and sign up for email lists for even deeper discounts. Lately, I have been coveting this Black Marble Tassel Bracelet from The Height. It’s a sophisticated and polished look for the office, yet still provides a fun feel for a happy hour or date night.
#4 Trendy Stuff - While it’s a great idea to experiment and play around with current trends, I don’t recommend making a large investment in anything (clothing or otherwise) that is super trendy. The nature of trends is that they fade, and then clothing moves to the black hole section of your closet. If you’re going to purchase an on-trend item, don’t blow your bank account on it. Invest in classic, timeless pieces instead.
I would love to hear from you! What work wear items do you typically save money on?
